The Cycle of Abuse: Faces of Circumcision
Bris Milah on Jewish Infant (Israel)
According to Genesis, Chapter 17, God required the circumcision of
Abraham and Sarah's son as a sign of his covenant with the Jews, saying, "An
uncircumcised man child...that soul shall be cut off from his people." But circumcision is also practiced by African Animists with no known connection to the Jews. The latter tell of a boy who walked to the river and was accidentally circumcised by the sharps reeds there, and how his people found the result so beautiful they continue the practice to this day. Here a ritual circumciser fulfills his calling at a berith milah in Jerusalem. |
